anyone know about home interiors in the 1960’s?
13.November, 2009
i need to know about the look, styles, colors, home fabrics, home accessories that were prevalent during the 60’s in any part of the world.
also were there any features of living spaces (again in any part of the world) that were unique to, or were introduced during the 60’s.
Shag carpet, sunken living rooms, drywall instead of plaster on walls and ceilings.Ceilings were coming down to 8′ and popcorn spray texture used.Lava lamps.harvest gold, avocado green, dark paneling.midwest usa Good luck
I am looking to buy curtains for my living room. Most of my furniture is of a light color – beige or light wood. Our floors are also light wood. We have no rug. Our walls are light yellow. And we have a moderate sized light wood-framed poster that is mainly of a blue-ish color. I would like to create a warmer, more homey feeling to the room. What are you suggestions for the color? I’m thinking maybe a dark green or a dark red?? Help from those interior designers out there??
Take a pic of your room and go to HGTV.com ( message boards or forum) and ask the same question and upload the pic– There are a slew of people on that forum that will help you figure it out

How much do interior design services really cost?
10.November, 2009
Would love to have an interior designer come to the house, but I’m afraid that it would be too much. Do they charge by the hour or a flat rate?
you can get their services virtually free if you use a store like JC Penny’s. If you are buying their products, they will help you decorate.
What are some good states for interior designers to work in?
10.November, 2009
I plan on opening my own firm (specializing in hotel and resteraunt design) after I get my degree (I will be a junior this upcoming quarter). What are the best states to live in for this business?
Thank you all in advance ![]()
Asheville, NC Lots of wealthy people are moving here from all over the country, to build lavish homes. And even if you don’t make any money, you’ll love living here! Oh, and these people eat out at the 600 restaurants that are squeezed into our little city in the mountains.
How to Compensate Interior Designer and General Contractor?
10.November, 2009
Help!
I am building a home and have an architect/GC. I also want to hire an interior designer. The desinger will obviously get paid for furniture, rugs, window treatments, etc.
The problem is how to pay the designer for fixtures, ligthing, builtins, wall coverings and materials that they design and specify when the GC wants to get paid on those items since they install them.
Argh!
There are many different ways to pay interior designers. You can pay them hourly, a percentage of the overall budget, or by them selling you items at a marked up price. You normally do not have to worry about how you will pay them – they will tell you how they must be compensated.
Can you add on another room inside a house?
10.November, 2009
If the materials cost only $500, and I’m just adding another small 7′ X 11′ bedroom to the interior house, is it legal? Do I need a building permit?
I’m not obstructing any structure beams or posts, I just want to rent the additional room. More so, why do you need a permit for a little project under $500 U.S. dollars?
You will need planning permission for any additional rooms. Go to your local authority office and ask for the forms. If you build without permission when you come to selling the house, you will have problems because the people will want to see the permission for your additional room

How to create a Interior decorating/design storyboard?
10.November, 2009
I am working on a storyboard for my decorating class. Can anyone help me?? I can’t find a thing on line! I have to have 1) a floor plan of a bedroom 2) co-responding fabrics that I would use and 3) a legend.
Here’s my problems:
1) It is a 1D drawing of the room with the use of stencils for the bed, lamps, (the actual furnature only) etc. How do I show the corresponding fabric I would use for the pillows since I am not supposed to "draw" them onto the actual floor plan of the bedroom?
2) I have only ever done square, simple rooms before, so showing the wall measurements was easy…now I have a balcony, on-suite and walk-in closet? All I have to do is a bed-room..but I wanted to do more. So, do I show the dimensions of everything? If so how? If not, how do I show the dimensions of the bedroom without making the floor plan look too messy?!
Sorry for such a long question, but I knew if anyone could help, it would be you guys! PLEASE help me!
caught doing what……..?? I don’t understand….
OK, here goes…
First mount your drawings to matte board (found in any major craft store). Use a neutral color of board OR one that compliments your color scheme.
For your corresponding fabrics and textures, take a swatch and do 1 of 2 things. Either use pinking shears to cut the squares and mount them flat to the board OR wrap them around pieces of foam core (craft store again) to give the a 3D look. Place them around the drawing, not on the drawing.
Using spray adhesive works well, but be careful and practice first. That stuff and get onto everything if you aren’t careful. When I did my boards, I always took my drawings to Kinkos and had copies made. This way I always had a back up should something go arwy.
Draw your measurement on the OUTSIDE of the walls. Use about a 1/4" space from the wall to your writings.
I hope this helps, good luck!!
where can I find home design ideas (exterior)?
07.November, 2009
I have a site of land which I have just been told I can build on. Before I go to see an architect to draw up plans etc I want to bring some pictures and ideas of what I’d like (something rural -uk) home design magazines are really expensive so i wondered if there are any good websites with home design images? I only ever seem to find interior ideas. Thanks
When Husband and I were building our home, we’d drive around and look at houses. If something caught our eye, we’d slow down to take a better look. If the Owner or someone was around we’d ask if we could take a picture. Everyone was very happy to oblige. They would even go out of their way to talk about design flaws and why this brick is better then that, and what Contractor they used, and all that other stuff that goes with building a house. We got all kinds of information and insight. Don’t get your information off of a web site. Go talk to people who have built a home.
