im just about to graduate high school, and ive been interested in designing homes since i can remember. Im looking to do the same thing Sarah Richardson does, she designs lottery homes, and she has a show on HGTV about building her house, which i want to do someday, build one from scratch. I honestly dont know whats involved to get there, in terms of what to do to get my foot in the door, and education. My family has money for education and ill most likely be going on scholarship for softball, and high marks. Do you know what school/program i have to get in for this, how long it takes, cost, and any other information. Also, do you know how well this industry does in Vancouver, BC?
any information would be great! Thanks!
Well multiple schools offer interior design programs. I too like you wanted to get into the field. But when I spoke to people who have graduated they told me that to actually be hired as an interior designer you have to have YEARS of experience.
My teacher told me that graduates are expected to work at places like home depot (don’t know if you have them there) Its the ones with 15+ years of experience that get the high paying jobs.
Cost depends on the school that you go to. Some community colleges do offer low cost interior design school, but then again you can go to some universities for this. As far as the industry does around your area I’m not sure.
But the best of luck to you! I hope you break the norm!

Why are reasonably-priced houses severely underrepresented in interior design and real estate TV shows?
04.December, 2009
The average person on these TV shows such as those on HGTV and TLC all have $400k+ houses. The average person in reality does not. Why is there such an imbalance in representation?
I watch a lot of the shows and I think to some extent it has to do with the areas where they are mostl likely to film the shows, namely large California cities, Chicago, Altlanta and the Washington DC areas in the US, and Toronto and Vancouver in Canada. Up until this year $400K was the median home price in those areas. I’ve noticed that the newer programs have backed down a bit and there have been more that are oriented towards houses $200K or less.
Also some if it has to do with both "house p*rn" (programmers understanding many viewers’ desire to see how richer folks live) and also that the sponsors whose products get promoted on the shows prefer to have them shown in higher end settings.
At least they seem to have recognized reality a bit more and are doing less of that "your house will appreciate X amount in the market." I can’t help but wonder if that attitude they fostered didn’t help feed people’s unrealistic expectations about the "bubble" market and encourage them to overmortgage their homes to finance the trendy (and largely unecessary) remodels that the shows promoted. I believe the home shows bear a lot of the blame for brainwashing people into the "house as status symbol" mindset and validating the absurd notion that spending $50,000 to tart up a perfectly functional kitchen was a smart use of money. You also gotta love the "green home" shows where they rip out almost new conventional kitchens, adding a huge amount of debris to the waste stream, so they can re-install pricey "green" materials. That’s not "green", it’s just wastefulness in the cause of fashion.
Is there any books available that is all about interior designing a performing arts theater or an Opera House?
19.November, 2009
I’m having a hard time to look for a book that is the same with my thesis topic.
I’d suggest doing a search using "WorldCat". It’s an online database that searches library records worldwide. Play around with your search words and see what you get. Seems there are a lot of books on the design of the Sydney (Australia) Opera House. A lot of other books and articles found when searching keywords "opera house" and "design". The "WorldCat" service is available through many university libraries. In case you don’t have access, here’s a few books I found:
Today’s culture facilities / Eduard Broto, 2006
Large multi-purpose halls for the performing arts : issues and concepts to consider before design / Kevin A. Kelly and James B. Gatton, 1985
Contemporary theater : evolution and design / Christos G. Athanasopulos, 1983
Theater design / by George C. Izenour ; with two essays on the room acoustics of multiple-use by Vern O. Knudsen and Robert B. Newman ; foreword by Alois M. Nagler, 1977
In addition to these, another useful source may be to do a search of dissertations and see if there has been any other research on your topic, then check their bibliographies.
Does anyone know of a free downloadable interior design, drafting or rendering program?
13.November, 2009
I need an interior design, drafting or rendering computer program through which I can create an accurate three dimensional rendering of my kitchen and several other rooms in my house. It does not have to have color, although that would be helpful. I also need to be able to print these out. I really do not want to go out and buy a program, however, if anyone knows of a cheap one, let me know about it.
In their May 2007 issue, "Smart Computing" magazine recommended that readers check out the "Better Homes & Gardens" magazine website for the kind of design tools you are seeking. I checked it out and here is the link:
http://www.bhg.com/bhg/category.jsp?categoryid=/templatedata/bhg/category/data/Tools.xml
It looks like there are design tools for all kinds of projects including room layout, furniture arrangement, color selection, window treatments, etc.. There are also tools that allow you to design your garden, plan your deck, and design other outdoor spaces. To be honest, I haven’t had time to thoroughly explore all of the tools, but they look interesting. Best of all, they are free.
Good luck with all of your projects.
How much do interior design services really cost?
10.November, 2009
Would love to have an interior designer come to the house, but I’m afraid that it would be too much. Do they charge by the hour or a flat rate?
you can get their services virtually free if you use a store like JC Penny’s. If you are buying their products, they will help you decorate.

Are there any interior design programs where students can do projects in your home for free?
05.November, 2009
I just bought a new house that’s BARE! I need help decorating it, but I don’t have a creative bone in my body? I love asian, contemporary, modern styles! Does anyone know of any interior design programs that utilizes actual rooms for class projects? Plus I’m broke now that I bought a new house. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!! I also need landscaping ideas!!!
I live in Temecula, California by the way.
I think your best bet is to write a show like HGTV, and see if they have a program that might use you as a TV showcase.
Are there any free online interior design sites?
02.November, 2009
I’m looking for a free online interior design site, where you can like… drag and drop furniture into a room to see how it would look, maybe be able to change the way the room itself is constructed so it looks more like our house… Does anyone know of a site like this?
I’m taking an interior design class at school and we used the program on the IKEA website. Depending on the rooms you want to plan, you can use the program to insert IKEA products into your custom designed room. There also are a few for kitchens and stuff on the HGTV website.
