What are the best colleges in the country for interior design?
12.February, 2010
I am a junior in high school and I am interested in pursuing interior design. I live in Santa Monica, so I am down the street from Los Angeles. I am curious as to what the most prestigious colleges are for interior design in the U.S. but I am most interested in the Los Angeles City area. Thanks!
I have been researching this too. I am about to graduate with a degree in something more general, so my options are a little bit limited compared to yours. However, I have found the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM), California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), California State University, Northridge (CSUN), Woodbury University, and Santa Monica College. These programs all look like they are worth finding out more information. Right now, I’m leaning toward choosing FIDM, but I’m still unsure.
Please, let me know which program you end up choosing and why. It will really help me in my own search. You can email me.
What is the difference between interior design and interior design+foundations for design?
18.January, 2010
I’m taking interior design in a year and ahalf for univeristy…
and I’m requesting the info right now.
but it gives to program choices…interior design and interior design with foundations for design?
Whats the difference?
which oen do i choose? I only want to be an interior designer.
You will need to check with whomever answers questions for your design program as to which one you should take; its impossible to answer for the data above exactly. That way you will get the best answer for your school. One may be for the degree & the other just an intro class etc.

Is a career in Product Design lucrative? I can draw visualize and am creative, starting from scratch, are there any institutes in Mumbai? Is free lancing an option? Any search engine leads me to Interior Design and Graphic Design, Is Product Design a general term for both? Is a graduation in Hotel Management sufficient or engineering is compulsory? Please help!
They are all very different areas of design -
1) Product Design – the design of items we use everyday, it’s very vast really – designing furniture, appliances, phones, cars, could be anything even designing something like a cigarette lighter.

2) Interior Design – deals with the look of spaces inside a building/house: designing a wall that divides a big room, creating special lighting effects.

3) Graphic Design – designing images like posters, advertisments, websites.. maybe I should just say the word ‘Photoshop’ =)

To answer the rest of your question, Hotel Management has liitle to do with either 3 professions – that focuses more on tourism and taking care of a hotel – getting a hotel up & running, fixing up rooms for guests, arranging food & other services. Engineering has something to do with Product & interior design, but they should incorporate the necessary skills into your course though so you won’t need to graduate as an engineer to build a room or a chair =)

How hard is it to get into the Wedding Planning or Interior Design feilds?
26.September, 2009
I currently have a degree in Graphic Design, but I’ve been considering starting a Wedding planning buisiness or becoming an interior designer. I plan to go back to school either way, but I don’t know anyone in these fields. So I’m wondering how hard it is to get into these fields and be succesfull. I have a little experience doing both and think I’d really enjoy either one.
Thanks in advance!
I hadn’t really thought of commercial or domestic interior design. They would probably both be pretty rewarding. I suppose commercial would be a little better with larger budgets and customers probably have a clearer idea of what they want.
By Interior Design, do you mean commercial or domestic?
I’m a commercial interior designer, and generally it is not a difficult industry to enter, but you won’t get far without the skills and/or qualifications.
Domestic Interior Design is a difficult business as so much of it is about building a customer base and word of mouth. Once you have a good reputation, you can go far, but getting there can be a very long journey.
If you really, really want this, then be prepared for some very hard (but rewarding) work.
Good luck
Slim.
Additional :
Domestic – You are employed for your creative ideas, but then have to adapt/amend/concede to the ideas of the client, however good/bad there taste is.
With both, budgets are relative, but you can get to do some cool stuff if you’re lucky.
I could personally never do domestic, as I could never stand in front of somebody and tell them that there ideas are OK when I really think they stink (don’t mind doing it with commercial as it’s rarely personal)
Slim.
Could you offer me some work experience in design, decoration, interiors etc???…I’m based in Somerset?
24.September, 2009
Im hoping that there might be somebody out there that could help me?
Im desperatley looking for some work experience with an interior decorater/designer/visual merchandiser etc, etc…
Im currently studying A level interior design and working in an decorative interiors shop, I also assist part time in a gallery.
If you feel you may be able to offer me some advice or even a few days unpaid work experience I would be incredibly grateful.
Im based in Somerset, but I do drive so would be happy to travel.
(Just incase anyone was wondering)I have approached a couple of local designers but unfortunatly they couldn’t offer me anything.
I also contacted my local Cath Kidston store, they couldnt help me either.
Thanks x
How wonderful that you are looking to gain experience and have taken action to do so. A suggestion, though I am not certain where Somerset is exactly, perhaps you can contact your local chapter of the ASID or other interior design professional membership organizations in your country and tell them you are seeking experience. Often, they will know of designers or industry partners that have opportunities available for internships. Good luck.
Job pertaining to Interior Design?
16.September, 2009
Ok, I would really love to do something with Interior Design once I am out of high school, however I want to know of jobs that have interior designing in them, but not exactly JUST interior designing. Such as another job that has to do with interiors. Could you please help me with some ideas and suggestions? Thank you a lot!
Hi…have you considered Kitchen Design? I am a kitchen designer (21 years). You get to help people with space planning, colors, and materials (wood, counter tops, flooring). It is a great career to get into…lots of places are in need of good designers (home centers, kitchen design studios, etc.). Go into a reputable kitchen showroom and ask someone about their job. You can do this job without a college degree, altho it does help in some respects. It’s a fun job…every kitchen is different. If you are creative, can multi-task, understand construction and how things go together, this may be a great career for you. Good luck!!
