How to Compensate Interior Designer and General Contractor?

Help!
I am building a home and have an architect/GC. I also want to hire an interior designer. The desinger will obviously get paid for furniture, rugs, window treatments, etc.
The problem is how to pay the designer for fixtures, ligthing, builtins, wall coverings and materials that they design and specify when the GC wants to get paid on those items since they install them.
Argh!
There are many different ways to pay interior designers. You can pay them hourly, a percentage of the overall budget, or by them selling you items at a marked up price. You normally do not have to worry about how you will pay them – they will tell you how they must be compensated.

Usually the GC works with the interior designer. The purpose of the GC is to take care of all of this behind the scene rubbish. Consider the interior designer like one of the GC’s subcontractors and let the two of them "duke-it-out".
